Hello, 10th graders! Welcome to today’s topic: “Thesis Statement”. The past few days we have been talking about the introduction of an essay. We have studied the first two parts of the introduction which are:
The hook: the sentence that is supposed to catch the reader’s attention
The details: which is background information about the topic being discussed.
Now we are going to learn about the thesis statement. The thesis statement is a sentence or two in your introduction that contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about. Thesis Statements are the backbone of your essay’s topic. Many writers think of a thesis statement as an umbrella: everything that you carry along in your essay has to fit under this umbrella, and if you try to take on packages that don't fit, you will either have to get a bigger umbrella or something's going to get wet.
